Extreme sleepiness, which affects up to six per cent of adults, can result in people falling asleep at inappropriate times. Dr Mohammad Sharief, a consultant neurologist and senior lecturer at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital, London, says: 'This drug really can transform people's lives, as has been the case for many of my MS patients.

"Now that it's licensed, it should help many more people with MS and a wide range of other conditions where fatigue is an issue. The potential benefits are enormous.' Other medical conditions it may help are narcolepsy, where patients fall asleep spontaneously, and obstructive sleep apnoea, where upper airway obstruction can lead to poor quality sleep.

The dose of Provigil will be different for different patients, depening on ones state of sleeplessness. Provigil is only seven years old but has already proved to be a useful tool in the promotion of healthy sleep behaviors as aposed to other drugs. It is now being tested for depression and fatigue related to cancer and other illnesses as well as for addiction. Some experts do fear that the rising use of the prescription Provigil, will fuel drug abuse. But this theory as of yet has not be proven.
